About the Company

The multinational telecommunications giant that AT&T is today traces its origins to 1875, when Alexander Graham Bell invented the first working telephone. Soon after, Bell and the two businessmen that funded his work, Gardiner Hubbard and Thomas Sanders, formed the American Bell Telephone Company.

In 1885, a wholly owned subsidiary of the company called the American Telephone and telegraph Company was incorporated and chartered to develop and maintain the first long distance telephone network. However, because telephone signals weaken as they travel through wires, building a telephone network that spans the entire country required several major innovations in technology.

The first loading coils, developed independently by AT&T and other inventors, paved the way for establishing a national telephone network that was built out to Denver. In 1913, the company devised the first practical electrical amplifiers, which made transcontinental telephony possible.

The company inaugurated commercial transatlantic telephone service to London 1927. Telephone service then became available to other nations such as Hawaii, Japan, and several countries in Europe. Transpacific cable service was developed in 1964.

The current iteration of the company was born out of the Southwestern Bell Corporation, which was one of the seven Regional Bell Operating Companies that were created in 1983 after the divestiture of their parent company.

In 1995, Southwestern Bell Corporation officially changed its name to SBC Communications Inc. Ten years later, SBC purchased its former parent AT&T Corp. but decided to retain the well-known branding. The original AT&T that was established in 1885 still exists today as a subsidiary of the company.

The new AT&T then began evolving from being a long distance telephone company into an integrated voice and data communications provider. Today, the company is known as a leading provider of a wide range of services, which includes fixed line and mobile telephony, broadband and fixed line internet services, and digital television.
