About Auntie Anne’s

The popular pretzel bakery that everyone knows as Auntie Anne’s was founded in 1988 as simple market stand in Downingtown, Pennsylvania. Husband and wife Jonas and Anne Beiler have already been making delicious pretzels before they decided to purchase the market stand in Downingtown, but they did not set out to establish a pretzel bakery at first.

Originally, Jonas and Anne had intended to provide free counselling services to families and couples in their community. They bought the market stand as a means of generating the income needed to turn their vision into a reality.

In time, they were able to create the pretzel that people in their community hailed as being better than the best they have ever had. This resulted in the recipe for the famous pretzel that Auntie Anne’s customers from all over the world enjoy today.

Auntie Anne’s grew at a rapid pace early on. After establishing their first bakery in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, the company was able to open their first mall location at the Park City Center in Lancaster a year after they started selling pretzels at their market stand in Downingtown.

By 1990, the pretzel bakery chain had spread to nine other states outside of Pennsylvania. Two years later, the first Auntie Anne’s airport location opened at Pittsburgh International Airport. The company’s first train station store was opened three years later at Penn Station in New York City.

The company enjoyed considerable commercial growth in the next seventeen years after the market stand in Downingtown was opened. By 2005, the number of Auntie Anne’s locations had grown to 887 bakeries in 47 states and twelve countries.

In October of 2006, the company’s original headquarters in Gap, Pennsylvania was moved to the former location of the Lancaster Post Office. The building maintains several 1920’s features,including brass doors, skylights, and high ceilings. It has been listed in the National Register for Historic Places since 1982.
