About the Company
Bank of America has been in the industry for two centuries, dating back as far as July 5, 1784 when its earliest mother company, Massachusetts Bank, was established. It was through a series of mergers and acquisitions that the company had been able to expand and make its vision possible. Consequently, BoA has progressed from a plain banking company into a full-service financial institution with lines of products like insurance policies and investment banking that would be offered to its customers worldwide.
In 1904, the Bank of Italy opened in San Francisco, California under the leadership of Amadeo Gianini. His primary goal was to serve the financial needs of immigrants relocating to the US at that period. When the destructive San Francisco earthquake happened in 1906, Gianini was able to retrieve all deposits out of the building and save it from the effects of the catastrophe that soon would follow the earthquake.
Therefore, the Bank of Italy was one of the few banks to have rendered its services to the public at the time when they needed it the most. Gianini used the deposits to lend it to his customers and let them have the chance to rebuild their livestock and lives. His customers were able to pay him back and that started the unending growth of the company, which he re-named it into Bank of America and Italy in 1922.
What followed the 1922 acquisition of Banca dell’Italia Meridionale was another series of mergers and consolidations in order to establish the Bank of Italy National Trust & Savings Association that included the Bank of America in Los Angeles, CA. This time, Gianini wanted to establish a national bank for the Americans so he continued on his mission in expanding the company’s conglomerates through business acquisition.
As a result, the Bank Holding Company Act of 1956 was passed in order for the BankAmerica Corporation to be allowed to own and operate all BoA locations and its division companies. And this also paved the way for the company to expand outside of California and later on, outside of the country.
Today, Bank of America has over 200,000 employees worldwide under its wings. Its primary services include banking, credit cards, loans and investments. Click here to learn more.
