About the Company
Bashas has been around since 1932, when the first store was opened by brothers Ike and Eddie Basha Sr. Their parents, Najeeb and Najeeby, immigrated to the United States from Lebanon in 1886 then moved from New York to Arizona in 1910.
After the success of the first store, the brothers continued to put up new locations in Arizona. For nearly 20 years, Bashas was modeled after the first store, selling groceries and a range of goods, such as blankets, axes, and gasoline.
When larger and more diverse supermarkets emerged as the future of grocery retailers in the 1950’s, the Basha brothers decided that it was time for a major revamp. They began converting their grocery stores and turning them into supermarkets, and the company greatly benefitted from the postwar economic boom.
However, as the company was in the midst of its transformation from being a chain of country stores into a supermarket chain, it lost one of its founders. Ike Basha died in 1958, leaving his brother Eddie to take sole control over the company.
Eddie Basha Sr. was soon joined by his son, Eddie Basha Jr., in managing the business. The father and son tandem led the company through its expansion phase until 1968, when Eddie Basha Sr. died, ten years after his brother Ike. By then, Bashas had already established 17 retail stores.
After the death of his father, Eddie Basha Jr. took the helm. Despite his youth and relative inexperience, he developed into an influential business leader and admired civic leader. Under his leadership, the company expanded at a rapid pace establishing close to 30 additional locations by the end of the 1980’s.
By 1994, Bashas had 67 stores in Arizona, which made it the third largest grocery retailer in the state. After a series of acquisitions, the company had increased the number of locations that they owned and operated to 89, thus establishing itself as the largest grocery retailer in Arizona in 1996.
When Eddie Basha Jr. died in 2013, the business was passed on to his son and current CEO, Eddie Basha III. The company today operates more than 130 stores in a number of distinct formats. All but two of Bashas stores are located in Arizona; one in Needles, California, and the other in Crownpoint, New Mexico.
The company currently operates stores in a number of different formats. These include Bashas, Food City, AJ’s Fine Foods, Bashas Diné Markets, and Eddie’s Country Stores.
