About the Company

Carmike Cinemas was established in 1982, when business executive Carl L. Patrick Sr. and family acquired Martin Theaters from Fuqua Industries. The company’s name was derived from a portmanteau of the names of his two sons, Carl Jr. and Michael.

With Carl Sr. taking on the role of chairman and chief executive, and Michael spearheading operations as company president, Carmike Cinemas embarked on what was deemed by other movie theater chains to be a risky attempt to expand, as home video and cable television were fast becoming a serious threat to the movie theater industry.

In 1983, the company built new theaters and acquired Video independent Theaters Inc., which added more than a hundred screens to the existing 265 screens that it inherited from the acquisition of Martin Theaters. By purchasing existing theaters or building new multi-screen ones in underserved areas, Carmike Cinemas was able to expand quickly throughout the South.

Three years later, in 1986, Carmike Cinemas acquired Essantee Theaters Inc. in a deal that brought in an additional 209 screens on top of the 54 screens that were built that year. Later, in October, the company was taken public, although the Patrick family retained about 75 percent of its voting stock.

The company built 35 screens and acquired 116 screens from its purchase of Consolidated Theaters Inc. in 1989. When the new decade rolled in, Carmike Cinemas bought out two of its biggest rivals in United Artists and Cineplex Odeon, and acquiring an additional 154 screens.

In 1991, the company made its single biggest acquisition when it brought in 353 screens as a result of a joint venture with Excellence Theaters. By the following year, it already had 1400 movie screens and revenues of over $172 million, establishing Carmike Cinemas as one of the biggest names in the industry.

When the movies that came out in 2000 failed to meet box office expectations, ticket sales – and the movie theater industry as a whole – suffered a major blow. Companies such as Carmike Cinemas, who underwent aggressive expansions in the preceding years, suffered huge losses and were forced to file for bankruptcy.

As a result of its declaration of bankruptcy, Carmike Cinemas was forced to sell or close down several of its more historic theaters, such as the Villa Theater in Salt Lake City, Utah, and the Indian Hills Theater in Omaha, Nebraska. The number of theaters that were owned or operated by the company dropped from 448 to a mere 300.

Carmike Cinemas regained financial stability in 2002, after successfully restructuring its debts and managing its operations. It immediately went to work on acquiring additional theaters from smaller competitors, which included GKC Theaters, MNM Theaters, and Rave Cinemas.

Today, the company owns and operates more than 2600 screens in 254 theaters, which are spread across 37 states. It is now one of the biggest movie theater companies in the United States, and has been dubbed “America’s Hometown Theater”.
