About the Company

Carvel was established in 1929, when founder Tom Carvel built and operated his own ice cream truck. Prior to establishing what would turn out to be a highly successful ice cream dynasty, Carvel tried his luck as an auto mechanic, a jazz drummer, and a door-to-door radio salesman.

Five years later, in the summer of 1934, Carvel and his girlfriend Agnes Stewart loaded a freezer stocked with ice cream confections onto a home-built trailer and drove north. As luck would have it, their truck suffered a flat tire, and Carvel started selling his slightly melted stock right where the truck broke down. Within two days, his entire stock was sold out.

It was then that he realized that a fixed location selling soft serve desserts was a potentially profitable idea. He and Agnes started selling custard from the parking lot of a pottery store in Hartsdale, New York.

During the early part of the 1940’s, Carvel travelled in order to sell custard at carnivals, while Agnes, whom he married in 1937, stayed and managed the Hartsdale location. His experience selling ice cream at Fort Bragg in North Carolina helped him gain more knowledge in refrigeration technology.

After his brief stint at Fort Bragg, Carvel invented and patented his own freezer, which he aptly named the “Custard King”. In 1947, he sold 71 of them, and later began franchising by helping and participating in the operations of the businesses that bought his freezers. To this day, the company is widely recognized for being the first to franchise a retail ice cream shop in the United States.

In 1951, the company celebrated the opening of its 100th ice cream shop. During that same year, Carvel also introduced what would later be a popular novelty menu item, the “Flying Saucer”, which was a circular ice cream sandwich. Five years later, the company converted the Hartsdale location into the world’s first ice cream supermarket.

In December of 2001, Investcorp became a minority shareholder of Carvel when it sold controlling interest to the Roark Capital Group, which is a private equity firm. Today, ownership of the popular ice cream company belongs to Focus Brands, which is an affiliate of the Roark Capital Group.
