About the Company
Chase was established in 1799 as The Bank of The Manhattan Company. Soon after its founding, the company became one of the fastest growing names in the banking industry, which, at the time, was largely dominated by the Bank of New York and the First Bank of the United States.
The company changed its name to the Chase National Bank in 1877, in honor of former United States Senator and former Chief Justice Salmon P. Chase, who also served as the nation’s Treasury Secretary under the Lincoln administration between 1861 and 1864.
The Chase National Bank underwent a lengthy expansion phase in the 1920’s when it acquired a number of lesser known banks, which included the Mechanics and Metals National Bank. The company bought the Mechanics and Metals National Bank, which was one of the country’s oldest banks, in 1926.
In 1955, the Chase National Bank and The Manhattan Company entered into a merger deal and formed The Chase Manhattan Bank. The company did away with its antiquated 1799 state charter, and began operating under a bank holding company, which was the Manhattan Corporation.
In December of 2000, Chase Manhattan made another major move when it acquired J.P. Morgan & Co., in what is touted to be the biggest banking mergers of all time. After the merger, the company began operating under the name JPMorgan Chase.
The new millenium also marked a period of growth for the company. In 2004, Chase became one of the largest credit card companies in the United States when it acquired Bank One. Among the other significant acquisitions made by the company are Bear Stearns & Co. and Washington Mutual.

If you have little to no experience in banking, but you are looking to start a career with a reputable bank, you might find a number of entry level positions in the company that you could qualify for. These positions include jobs as tellers and personal bankers.
Tellers have one of the most important jobs in any bank. As the customers’ first point of contact, tellers play a significant role in defining the customers’ overall banking experience.
If you get hired as a teller, your responsibilities will mostly revolve around helping the bank’s customers with basic account maintenance and answering customer inquiries. Tellers typically make around $10 to $13 an hour, with opportunities for pay rate increase available with experience.
You can also work in the company as a personal banker. As such, your responsibilities will include helping customers open new bank accounts, addressing customer service issues, and recommending financial services that best suits the needs of the customers.
Should you get hired as a personal banker, do not be surprised if you are also asked to perform teller duties during peak hours. Personal bankers are given a slightly higher salary, earning around $14 to $17 an hour.
Qualified applicants can also become part of the bank’s management team. If you wish to become a branch manager or assistant branch manager at Chase, you will need to show that you have at least two years of financial management experience in a retail bank.
Managers are responsible for developing strategies geared towards increasing the bank’s profits, and helping employees grow as professionals and as individuals. They are also responsible for hiring and training new employees, maintaining positive work environments, and developing long term business relationships with the bank’s customers.
Because they hold more responsibility and accountability within a particular branch, managers are given a significantly higher salary. Assistant branch managers can earn around $40,000 in annual salary, while the branch manager earns around $60,000 to $70,000 a year.
