The company is owned by K-VA-T Food Store, which traces its history back to 1955 when founder Jack Smith opened his branch of Piggly Wiggly in Grundy, Virginia. Clerk – clerks operate and perform customer service duties in the the department they are assigned in, but specific job responsibilities depend on their department. Aside from customer service duties, they are required to prepare food items for purchase, manage inventory and stock shelves, and maintain cleanliness. Clerks may also need to assist customers with shopping related needs.

Food City clerks must have good customer service skills and professionalism. They initially earn minimum wage, but may get up to $9 an hour with experience.

Cashiers must have basic mathematical skills, friendly personalities, and professionalism. They normally earn minimum wage, but may earn more with experience.

Management – management is composed of the department manager, assistant store manager, and store manager. They also monitor budgets and other financial indicators like inventory, and develop and implement action plans to drive sales.
