The cooperative’s financial state took a severe hit in 1995, when Edwards Super Food Store acquired 45 Foodtown grocery stores and converted them into Edwards’s stores. This led to a decline that saw a number of store closures and a declaration of bankruptcy in 1998.

During this period of financial instability, the cooperative even had to shut down its warehouse, and utilize the services of various wholesalers instead. However, Foodtown was still responsible for negotiating with suppliers, as well as developing advertising, promotional, and marketing programs.

Foodtown then began a resurgence by bringing back several grocery stores had had left the fold in the early 1990’s. It was also able to open five new stores in Pennsylvania, and several existing locations were able to renovate their stores and expand their operations.

All Foodtown grocery stores are owned and operated independently either by one person or by a company. Working with registered dietitians, the retailers’ cooperative also provides its shoppers with valuable health tips, recipes, and other useful information.
