About the Company
The American automobile manufacturer takes its name after its founder, Henry Ford, who incorporated the Ford Motor Company in June of 1903. After a rough start in the car manufacturing business, the company began making large profits thanks to the help of investors such as John Gray, who was then president of the German American Savings Bank, and his nephew Alexander Malcomson, who was Ford’s business partner.
During the early years of the company, Ford produced a number of vehicles that included the historic Model A in 1903, the Model K in 1907, and the Model S, which was the company’s last right-hand steering model. Other notable early models included the Enger 40, the Colt Runabout, the Oldsmobile Runabout, and the Success.
In 1908, Ford introduced the Model T, which is widely regarded as the world’s first affordable automobile. The first few cars were built at the Piquette Road Manufacturing Plant, which was the first factory owned by the company. During its first full year of production in 1909, the factory produced around 18,000 Model T’s.
By 1913, the company had developed all of the basic techniques used in manufacturing automobiles, which enabled it to create the world’s first moving modern assembly line. This feat of ingenuity significantly cut the production time from 12 hours and 30 minutes down to an hour and 33 minutes.
Ford also began expanding rapidly outside the United States. In less than 20 years, the company was able to open assembly plants in other countries such as Canada, Ireland, England, France, Austria, Denmark, Germany, Australia, South Africa, and Argentina.
In 1922, the company made its way into the luxury car market by acquiring Henry Leland’s Lincoln Motor Company, which was founded in 1917 and named after former US President Abraham Lincoln. Six years later, the company was able to build the largest museum of American history, which featured former US President John F. Kennedy’s Lincoln limousine, which Ford leased to the White House.
During the Great Depression, Ford and other automobile manufacturers responded to the economic collapse by reducing the scale of their operations and eliminating workers. This resulted in a massive protest in 1932 where around 3000 to 5000 laid off workers marched on Ford’s River Rouge plant and petitioned for financial support.
Ford also made a significant contribution to the advancement of the military, despite the company’s early insistence on the belief that peaceful trade was the best way to prevent war. By the end of World War II, the American car manufacturer had become so important to the military that the Roosevelt administration was prepared to nationalize the company if the need arose.
One of the company’s most iconic car designs was introduced in 1955. During the 1950’s, the Thunderbird became a symbol of personal luxury. Ford produced more than eleven generations of this design which ran from 1955 through 2005.
More than 50 years of automotive innovation passed, and the company produced a number of successful car models such as the Falcon, the Fiesta, the Mercury Grand Marquis, the Mustang, and the Ford Taurus. The company also acquired British car manufacturer Jaguar in 1989.
Today, the company stands at the forefront of American automobile manufacturing. With modern designs such as the Expedition, the F150, and the Fusion, Ford continues its tradition of innovation and success. The company’s headquarters is located in Dearborn, Michigan.
As a multinational company that is known worldwide, Ford also provides employment to more than 160,000 people who are working in different manufacturing plants and offices around the globe.
