In 1947, businessman Paul Baddour, along with his two brothers, opened a small hometown discount store in Coldwater, Mississippi, which would soon be recognized throughout history as the very first Fred’s store. By 1953, the company had grown to have 53 locations, and their headquarters were moved to Memphis, Tennessee.
Most of the early stores were located in small towns such as Stamps, Arkansas, and Iuka, Mississippi. They mostly offered closeout items that could be sold at discounted prices. The company restarted its expansion and by 2003, sales had already surpassed $1 billion.
