The company known as Gander Mountain began as a small retailer that sold hunting and shooting supplies to gun dealers in Wilmot, Wisconsin in 1960. Wilmot is located near Gander Mountain, which is the highest peak in Lake County, Illinois.

After successfully acquiring and rebranding Holiday Sports, the company had grown to have 26 stores by 1997.
