About the Company
Giant Eagle’s long history of success began in 1918, when the Goldstein, Porter, and Chait families from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania established a fledgling grocery company called Eagle Grocery. Within the next few years Eagle Grocery grew and by the 1920’s, the company had already built more than 120 stores in the region.
In 1928, the three families sold the company to the Kroger Company and agreed to leave the grocery business for the next three years. During the same period, the Moravitz and Weizenbaum families were also building a successful chain of grocery stores, which was called OK Grocery.
Soon after, in 1931, a successful merger between all five families resulted in the creation of Giant Eagle, which opened its first store five years later on Brownsville Road. Throughout the 1930’s and the 1940’s, even as the whole country was going through the hardships of the Great Depression and World War II, Giant Eagle continued to grow steadily in and around the Pittsburgh area.
For the next few decades Giant Eagle continued to experience commercial success as the company began opening more stores and even expanding their average store size to become the leading supermarket chain in the region.
The company’s expansion soon made it possible for the supermarket chain to grow outside of Pennsylvania. In 1980, the company bought the Tamarkin Company, which owned several Valu-King stores in Ohio that were later converted into Giant Eagle stores.
In the late 1990’s, Giant Eagle acquired International Seaway Foods, which was a small holding company that operated several Stop-n-Shop stores in Cleveland. Giant Eagle also acquired several other stores in Northeast Ohio, such as the former Apples supermarkets in Akron.
It was also during the 1990’s that the company introduced the Eagle’s Nest, which was an in-store learning activity center where shoppers can have their children stay under supervision. By this time, Giant Eagle had grown to operate 137 stores that ranged from small neighborhood markets to huge hundred square foot superstores.
Since then, the Giant Eagle chain of supermarkets continued to expand aggressively, opening several supermarket locations in the Columbus region from 2000 to 2008. Today, Giant Eagle operates more than 400 retail locations, including 190 Giant Eagle Express locations, which are a stores that operate both as a supermarket and as a convenience store.
