About the Company

In its early days, GNC was not the health and nutrition retail giant that it is today. In fact, the company went through several periods of turmoil before rising to become the industry leader that its competitors strive to keep up with.

In 1935, an American businessman named David Shakarian opened his own health food store in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The store was called Lackzoom, which was the name of the yogurt brand that the family developed, and it sold a variety of products that were designed to help improve one’s health. .

Despite having only made a small profit on opening day, Lackzoom proved to be quite a successful venture. In six months, Shakarian was able to open a second store in another location, and business seemed to be looking up for Lackzoom.

Unfortunately, tragedy soon struck both Lackzoom store locations. In 1936, the infamous St. Patrick’s Day flood came when the Ohio river overflowed, decimating areas in Pittsburgh and completely destroying the two Lackzoom locations.

Despite the disaster, Shakarian continued to strive towards success by re-opening the two pioneer locations and opening an additional six stores in the next five years. He also began promoting his products by informing people about the benefits of taking care of their health.

As the 1960’s rolled in, Shakarian continued to expand his business by opening numerous store locations in other states. It was during this massive expansion that Shakarian decided to change the company’s name to General Nutrition Center, or the now popular moniker, GNC.

The company continued to experience great success in the beginning of the 1980’s, although this era was again marred by tragedy. The death of founder Shakarian as well as overexpansion resulted in the family’s decision to sell the company to the Thomas Lee Company in the late 1990’s.

Since then, the company has been sold, managed, and bought by four different entities until it went public in 2011. Today, despite the challenges that the company had gone through, GNC remains a formidable force in the health and nutrition retail industry.

In recent years, GNC has begun offering more health and nutrition related products in their retail outlets. These include health magazines and books about proper health management.

As the company continues to grow, more GNC job openings are being offered to individuals who possess the same passion for success that the company exemplifies. If you are at least 18 years old, highly motivated, and interested in working for one of the world’s biggest retailers and distributors of health and wellness products, feel free to apply to GNC now.
