About the Company
Kaiser Permanente was founded in 1945 through the parallel efforts of industrialist Henry J. Kaiser and physician Dr. Sidney Garfield. Together, they laid the groundwork for what was to become the largest managed care organizations in the country.
The company’s history can be traced as far back as 1933, when Dr. Garfield was brought in by Kaiser and several other construction contractors to care for the construction workers who were building the Colorado River Aqueduct.
In 1939, a few years before the start of World War II, Kaiser’s company experienced a massive increase in the number workers that he employed. Kaiser then asked Dr. Garfield to arrange for an insurance plan to cover all of his workers, and the resulting entity became the foundations of the Kaiser Permanente.
After the war, Kaiser Permanente memberships plummeted, with tens and thousands of workers leaving the North Carolina yards. After some aggressive marketing, membership surged back to decent figures, and in 1948, the organization became known as the Permanente Medical Group.
The organization took its current name after Henry Kaiser unilaterally instructed all the trustees of the health plans, medical groups, and hospital foundations to append his name before Permanente in 1952. Within five years, Kaiser Permanente membership had grown to more than 800,000.
Over the next few years, the organization successfully transformed itself into a large-scale, self-sustaining enterprise. In 1977, all six of Kaiser Permanente’s existing regions became recognized as federally qualified health maintenance organizations, just a year after membership figures reached three million.
Today, Kaiser Permanente offers coverage to around 9.3 million health plan members. It has approximately 170,000 employees and around 15,000 physicians providing health care and medical services in 37 medical centers and 611 medical offices.
