Krystal was founded in October of 1932 by entrepreneurs Rody Davenport Jr. and J. Glenn Sherrill during the early years of the Great Depression. The two founders believed that even in the severe economic conditions that their home city of Chattanooga, Tennessee was experiencing, there was still room for a restaurant that would serve good food at the lowest possible prices.

During the 1950’s, the company opened its first drive-thru window. Since then, drive-thru windows have become a mainstay at many of the fast food chain’s locations.
It was also in the 1950’s when the company started selling cake doughnuts, which eventually became a popular dessert and breakfast item. These cake doughnuts, as well as the fried chicken that was introduced in 1970, were sold at a separate section inside most Krystal locations.
