About the Company

Kumon attributes its establishment to a father’s desire to improve the way his son learned math. In 1954 in Osaka, Japan, high school math teacher Toru Kumon decided to find new ways to teach math when his son Takeshi, who was in second grade at the time, came home with a low score on a math test.

After looking through his son’s math books, he found that the learning materials that Takeshi used in school were disorganized and had no clear progression of lessons. He bought math drill sheets for his son, hoping that they could help in his learning, but found that nothing he could buy really suited his Takeshi’s needs.

Kumon then decided to write his own math drill sheets for his son. He devised his own system wherein he would write a new drill sheet every day. The sheets gradually became more difficult each day, but Takeshi greatly benefitted from his father’s system.

By the time Takeshi was in sixth grade, he had already completed about 1,000 of his father’s drill sheets. By the time he was 12 years old, he was advanced enough to comprehend calculus, and he was able to solve math problems from university entrance tests. With that, the Kumon Method was born.

Kumon was so pleasantly surprised and impressed by his son’s progress that he decided to try his approach on other children. In 1958, he incorporated the Kumon Institute of Education, where he helped children find their level of understanding, and provided them with drill sheets that were appropriate for their level.

In 1962, Kumon opened his first center in Tokyo, and his method became the most widely used after-school math program in Japan. As he opened more learning centers outside of Osaka, he reproduced his materials and taught his methods to franchisees, and provided them with a disciplined training program that included newsletters, meetings, and workshops.

The Kumon method then began penetrating the world market. After having done well in South Korea, whose educational system is similar to that of Japan, Kumon entered the North American market when it started its franchising efforts on the East Coast of the United States.

Interest in the Kumon method in the United States started growing in 1988, when the Sumiton Elementary in Alabama included it in the regular curriculum. Students enjoyed working on the drill sheets, and the school leapt from being one of the lowest-scoring schools in its county to being near the middle in only one year.

By the time Toru Kumon died in 1995, his method had already spread to more than 2 million children around the world. Today, that number has more than doubled, with students learning to improve their math skills in more than 7,500 Kumon learning centers in 48 countries.
