About the Company
The company was founded by Samuel Lord in 1826. He was an immigrant to the United States from England, and his wife’s cousin, George Washington Taylor. The first store was located on Catherine Street in Manhattan, New York, and it offered a variety of merchandise such as hosiery, ladies wear, and cashmere shawls.
Business went well for Lord and Taylor, and in 1870, the store was moved to a new cast iron building that was located along the Ladies’ Mile area on Broadway and 20th. Soon after, the store became one of the first stores on Fifth Avenue, which is touted to be the most expensive street in the world today.
In 1946, Lord and Taylor made upscale retail history by becoming the first department store on Fifth Avenue to have a female president, Dorothy Shaver, at the helm of the company. Shaver was highly instrumental in developing the revolutionary concept of having a personal shopper, which provided the store’s customers with one-on-one help as they made their selections.
During the 1970’s, the company expanded into Texas, Michigan, and Illinois. It continued its rapid expansion when it opened several stores in Florida during the early 1980’s, until it was acquired by May Department Stores in 1986.
At one point, the chain had 86 stores all across the country. However, after a restructuring in 2003, the company returned to its roots, and focused on maintaining an upscale experience in its remaining 54 stores.
In October of 2006, NRDC Equity Partners, LLC completed a deal wherein it acquired Lord and Taylor, and immediately began renovating existing stores and opening new locations in Chicago. Sales shot up soon after the company brought in upscale clothing brands such as Strellson, Marc Jacobs, and Michael Kors.
Later, NRDC Equity Partners, LLC acquired the 338-year old Canadian department store retailer Hudson’s Bay Company, or HBC. After some restructuring in 2012, Lord and Taylor became a division of HBC, along with Hudson’s Bay, Home Outfitters and Saks Fifth Avenue.
Today, Lord and Taylor operate 50 upscale stores, most of which are located in the eastern region of the United States. Aside from clothing and apparel, the company also offers footwear, jewelry, beauty products, fragrances, electronics, bedding and houseware items.
