Part time Sales Associate is an entry level position and starting salary is around $7 per hour.

Full Time Sales Associate is usually a promotion from the part time positions and starting salary can range from $8 per hour to $10 per hour.

Store Manager is both promoted from within and hired externally. Pay is commensurate with experience.

The store associates will greet and assist customers, stock shelves, provide cashier services, provide all types of guest services and occasionally teach classes in arts and crafts.

Store Managers in the retail environment include Sales Lead, Assistant Manager, and Store Manager. All of these positions are full time and all might schedule and supervise staff, interview and hire staff, oversee specific areas of the store, delegate and make sure that every customer is satisfied.

Sales Leads is an hourly position at $10 per hour to $12 per hour.

Assistant Manager is a salaried position earning between $25,000 and $35,000 per year.

Store Manager is a salaried position earning in excess of $75,000.

Company History

As mentioned previously Michaels Stores Inc. is the largest arts, crafts and home decorations retailer in the United States and Canada. In 1973 Michael Dupey was working in the family business, Dupey Enterprises when he converted a Ben Franklin store into the first Michaels arts and craft store.

The first store was located in Dallas, Texas and was transformed by Dupey Enterprises into the chain concept and they added stores throughout the 1970’s. Dupey Enterprises owned and controlled Michaels until the early 1980’s. By the end of the 1970’s there were 11 Michaels stores with the majority in Texas. Michaels career opportunities did not really grow again until new ownership took control in 1983. During the Wyly ownership Michaels grew quickly and expanded throughout the United States and Canada including Puerto Rico.
