In 1973, Andrew Cherng and his father opened The Panda Inn in Pasadena to introduce Americans to the flavors of Szechuan and Mandarin to America. It was not until 1997 that the first drive-thru Panda Express was opened. In between the first restaurant and the first drive thru, the Panda Express could be found in mall food courts.

The original Panda Express was opened in 1983 in California. In opening a fast food version of the Panda Inn, Cherng was determined to maintain the quality and freshness of the meats, vegetables and spices to be used at the Express.

That commitment to quality and the taste using the best ingredients is the secret to the success that the Panda Express has experienced in the United States and around the globe. Panda Express is the largest chain of Asian fast food in the US.

Panda Express has over 1,600 restaurants in all 50 states, plus Puerto Rico, Mexico, Japan, and Canada. The Panda Group is the parent company and together there are over 23,000 employees. Every day there are many jobs with this company available and you can complete a Panda Express application here.

A Short History of the Company

As mentioned briefly, Panda Express was founded by Andrew Cherng and his father in 1973. They first opened the Panda Inn in Pasadena and brought Mandarin and Szechuan flavors to the area for the first time. Working with his wife now instead of his father, Andrew was committed to using only the best meats, the freshest vegetables and the most aromatic spices.

This vision has served Panda Express well as it continued to grow across the county. By 1983 Andrew and his wife Peggy had opened the first fast food smaller version of the Panda Inn at the Glendale Galleria. What followed was amazing growth of the Panda Express, and of the Panda Express jobs, throughout the next two decades.

In 1987, the first Panda Express was opened outside the United States in Ala Moana in a Honolulu shopping center. Panda Express career opportunities grew again in 1988 and 1991 respectively, by opening stores in a supermarket and another on a street front.

This remarkable growth continued through the 1990s until the first drive thru Panda Express was opened in 1997 in Hesperia, California. This was the first stand-alone Panda Express and began a trend that continues today.

Panda Express celebrated its 100th restaurant in 2002 in San Diego and its 888th in 2006, followed by its 1000th in 2007. Today there are plenty of Panda Express career activities in its 1,600 restaurants in all 50 states, plus Puerto Rico, Mexico, Japan and Canada.
