About the Company
Pilot Flying J traces its origins to 1958, when American businessman and philanthropist James Arthur “Jim” Haslam II opened his first Pilot gas station in Gate City, Virginia. The first location stood where an old gas station was, and the property was purchased for $6,000.
By 1965, the company had grown to include 12 gas stations. At the same time, half of the company was acquired by the Marathon Oil Company, helping it to build more locations all across the country. By 1973, Pilot had more than 50 gas stations and annual sales of about $30 million.
The company opened its first convenience store in 1976, on Alcoa Highway in Knoxville, Tennessee. A year later, Pilot acquires the Lonas Oil Company, also in Knoxville, and converted nearly all of that company’s locations into convenience stores.
With more than a hundred convenience stores and nearly $175 million in annual sales, the company opened its first travel center, which also had its own fast food restaurant, in Corbin, Kentucky. Pilot then bought out Marathon’s half of the business in 1988.
During the next few years, Pilot focused on developing its convenience stores, while maintaining its status as one of the top suppliers of gas and oil products in the United States. The company once again entered into an agreement with Marathon, this time to form Pilot Travel Centers, in 2001.
The newly formed company then went on a significant growth phase. It acquired Williams Travel Centers in 2003, and opened its first international travel center in Canada three years later. In 2008, Pilot completely buys out Marathon Petroleum’s interest, and took in CVC Capital Partners as a minority financial partner.
In 2010, Pilot agreed to acquire Flying J’s travel centers in an effort to have the latter removed from Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The resultant company started doing business as Pilot Flying J, while retaining Pilot Travel Centers LLC as its legal name.
Today, Pilot Flying J owns and operates more than 650 locations all across the United States and Canada. Ownership of the company is now distributed among three entities; Pilot, who is the majority owner, along with minority partners FJ Management Inc. and CVC Capital Partners.
