About Price Chopper

Price Chopper is a US chain of groceries founded in New York’s Capital District in 1932. It was originally called Public Service Market, and was founded by Joseph E. Grosberg and Russian Jewish immigrants Bernard and William Golub.

The first grocery was in Green Island, New York, and was so successful that they opened more stores in the region. In 1943, they bought out Grosberg and founded the present parent company Golub Corporation.

In 1973, the Golubs changed the name to Price Chopper after deciding to change its operating strategy and slashing all prices. Since then, the company has expanded and innovated new concepts in grocery shopping.

Price Chopper was one of the first groceries to change its format from traditional stores to superstores, combine food and drug units, and implement 24 hour stores. They were considered state of the art when they opened in the early 1980’s, which sold full-service meat, and had a bakery and seafood department, along with the unheard-of addition of banks and pharmacies.

In 1993, Price Chopper experienced another revamp and featured take-out and ready-made meals, as well as food courts with the grocery’s in-house brands, like Roasters rotisserie, Bella Roma pizza, Coyote Joe’s tacos, and The Bagel Factory.

Today, the grocery chain has three private label brands, Price Chopper for most food products, Price Chopper Naturals for organic products, and Central Market Classics for upscale food choices. There are over 130 stores in Upstate New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Connecticut, and New Hampshire.

Price Chopper Application and Interview Tips

Price Chopper considers its hiring process to be a rigorous multi-step process. But if you come prepared, you will certainly ace your interview and be part of a growing team that values employee development and success.

The process begins by submitting an employment form on the careers page of the official website. After the recruiting team reviews your inquiry and finds you suitable for the job you are applying for, they will contact you for an interview.

Price Chopper interviews candidates whether or not they have experience, but the grocery chain prefers those who apply online.

Usually, the first step of the interview is to fill out paper versions of the forms you submitted online. After you are done, you will participate in either a one on one interview or a group interview, depending on the number of candidates.

Before your interview, do research on the grocery chain. Read its history, its customer service style, product and service offering, and how it’s different from other grocery chains.

Doing research ahead of time is ideal because chances are, you will be asked what you know about Price Chopper. An extensive knowledge of the grocery chain will impress your interviewer and give you more information to add to your interview.

The interview is normally short and lasts 15 to 30 minutes depending on your answer. If you have prior grocery experience, you might even be asked one or two questions only.

For those who have no experience,, the interview will focus on your personal details, employment history, relevant job skills, character references, and flexibility of scheduling. Below are some questions you may be asked during your interview:

  • What do you know about Price Chopper?
  • What can you contribute to the brand?
  • Why do you want to work for Price Chopper?
  • How well do you handle pressure?
  • Do you work well in team settings?

Your interviewer may also ask a series of situational questions to see how you would react in certain situations. These are made-up, but it is important to give the best possible answer since it would reflect how you would react when the situation does arise.

Some possible sample situational questions are:

  • How would you handle a busy day?
  • A customer approached you and said he was not he was upset we didn’t have something. How would you handle the situation?
  • A customer is rude to you. How would you handle him?
  • Can you tell us about a time you had a challenge? How did you overcome it?
  • What would you do if you caught a shopper stealing?

Take a few seconds to process the question before answering. This will give you enough time to come up with the best answer. Whenever you answer, always highlight excellent customer service, even with rude customers and a high-traffic day.

It is a good idea to prepare answers before the interview, so you have enough time to think of the best response. Answering in calm and confident tones will impress your interview because it will seem like you can handle pressure.

It is also a good idea to dress up for your interview. You don’t need to wear a suit and tie, but coming well-dressed will give the impression that you are a professional. For men, a button-down shirt paired with slacks and leather shoes is a good choice, while ladies will do well with a simple blouse and a simple pair of slacks or a skirt.

During your interview, it is very important to be friendly, accommodating, and cheerful. The job you’re applying for is service-oriented, so it is important to exhibit these traits as early as your interview.

If you have no experience, make them want to hire you by saying you are committed, a team player, and can work under minimal supervision. These are the skills highly valued in grocery stores, which can get very busy.

After the interview, thank your interviewer for taking the time to see you and that you’re excited to start working. You may follow-up after a few days.
