About the Company

Schlumberger was founded in 1926 by the Schlumberger brothers, Conrad and Marcel, whose inventions in the fields of geophysics and well logging are widely regarded as the foundations of the entire industry today.

In its early years, the company was given its French name Société de Prospection Électrique, or the Electric Prospecting Company when translated in English. It initially provided surface prospecting for the metal ore mining industry, although it eventually began exploring possible oil-bearing structures.

In the 1930’s, the company further explored the principles of well logging when the Schlumberger brothers presented their paper, which was called “Electrical Coring: A Method of Determining Bottom-Hole Data by Electrical Measurements” to the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers in New York.

Possibilities with Schlumberger technology flourished in the late 1940’s, despite Conrad’s Schlumberger’s tragic death in 1936 and the eruption of World War II. This was the time when the first offshore oil rigs were being deployed in the Gulf of Mexico.

Schlumberger made several major breakthroughs in the 1950’s. It began to experiment with a micro-neutron device, which could measure formation porosity by sensing hydrogen molecules, in 1951. Work in this field eventually resulted in the creation of the Schlumberger Accelerator Porosity Tool.

In 1956, the company acquired American testing and production company Johnston Testers, and completes its first induction-electrical log. It also built a holding company called Schlumberger Limited in Curaçao.

In the 1960’s the company acquired British electrical instrumentation company Solartron, as well as the cable operations of Vector Cable. It also purchased Daystrom Measurement Instruments, and introduces its formation density tool in 1962. Schlumberger Limited also listed in the NYSE that same year.

The use of computers and more sophisticated engineering in the 1970’s helped the company develop a host of complex tools that aim to improve accuracy. The advantage the tools provided catapulted Schlumberger into becoming the market leader, poised to benefit from the upsurge in global oil exploration.

More major deals were completed in the 1990’s, with Schlumberger acquiring companies such as GeoQuest Systems, Inc., Prakla-Seismos, Intra Technologies Corp. Petroleum, and Camco International. It also celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Schlumberger-Doll Research Center in Ridgefield, Connecticut.

Today, Schlumberger products and services are more relevant than ever, as the search for unconventional oil and gas continues to intensify. As the largest oilfield services company in the world, Schlumberger also provides career opportunities to more than 125,000 employees working in various locations in 85 countries.
