About the Company

The company began in 1962, when 20-year old Murray Koffler inherited two of their family’s pharmacies in suburban Toronto. Within a few years, the pharmacy chain had grown to operate more than 50 stores, and by the 1970’s, Koffler’s Drugs became known as Shoppers Drug Mart.

Throughout the 1970’s, Shoppers Drug Mart went through a rapid expansion phase. During this period, it acquired 100 Cunningham Drug Stores in Alberta and British Columbia in 1972, and 26 Lord’s Supervalue Pharmacies in 1974.

Shoppers Drug Mart continues to grow in the 1980’s. The company bought Super X Drugstores, which was a chain consisting of 72 retail pharmacy stores based in Ontario. Soon after the acquisition, the company Western Canadian pharmacy chain Pinder’s Drugs.

In 1995, the company made two major acquisitions when it bought all 24 Bi-RIte Drug Stores, which were based in Western Canada, along with 135 Big V Drugstores. The following year, the company opened its first Shoppers Home Health Care store.

Ownership of Shoppers Drug Mart has been passed on number times, first in 1986 when Koffler sold it to restaurant and pharmacy corporation Imasco. Then in 2000, Shoppers Drug Mart was sold to a consortium of investors that included Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co., Bain Capital, Inc., Charlesbank Capital Partners, DLJ Merchant Banking Partners, Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, and CIBC Capital Partners.

The company was acquired by Loblaw Companies in 2013, and continues to be the holding corporation’s largest subsidiary to date. This deal marked the first time a Canadian retailer of Shopper Drug Mart’s size was taken over by another company.

Today, Shoppers Drug Mart is the largest full-service chain of drug and convenience stores in Canada. The company operates close to 1300 stores that consist of stores that carry the brand in nine provinces and two territories, and stores that go by the name Pharmaprix in Quebec.
