About the Company

Sunoco is one of the largest companies in the state of Pennsylvania, competing against ComCast and Amerisource Bergen. Therefore, its current headquarters is in Pennsylvania as well, specifically in Philadelphia.

The oil and gas manufacturer has been in the industry for over 125 years. It prides on having a rich business heritage and tradition that contributed a lot to the success of the company and of the country’s petroleum industry.

Sunoco produces millions of gallons of crude oil, fuel and other related products. These gallons are being transported to different areas of the US through their logistical and retail operations. So to make all of these happen, the company will need qualified individuals to fill in their retail, distribution center and corporate departments.

History

Sunoco became a reality via the partnership of two Americans; Edward Emerson and Joseph Newton Pew. They have established the company on March 27, 1886 as a result of diversifying their assets to the petroleum industry. They originally opened a natural gas company named The Peoples Natural Gas Co. in Pittsburgh, PA.

In just a few years after its establishment, the company became one of the fastest-growing crude oil suppliers in Ohio. By 1890, the name was changed to The Sun Oil Company of Ohio and began manufacturing, storing and transporting oil and petroleum products in the region. This growth enabled the company to open its subsidiary Sun Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in 1916.

In 1922, the emerging oil and gas supplier changed its name to Sun Oil Company and three years later, it entered the New York Stock Exchange. The public offering helped them open another business for manufacturing oilfield equipment, which was named Sperry-Sun, a collaboration with Sperry Gyroscope in 1929.

After focusing on oil and gas, the company also took interest in mining which they named the Cordero Mining Company located in Nevada. This business division was established to produce mercury for Sunoco Motor Oils. The company eventually experienced a rapid expansion from south to north during the 1950’s, including Canada.

In 1975, Sun Oil had to be re-structured to form 14 operating units under which one non-operating mother company and two subsidiaries will be established. This major undertaking required them to move their global offices to Radnor, PA and then began its brand-new operations under its new name, Sun Company, Inc.

In 2004, Sunoco entered the car racing market as they wanted exposure. The company exchanged deals with NASCAR to be its official fuel supplier. The company then became the manufacturer of gasoline for the next 30 racing events.

This was then followed by an official partnership with INDYCAR, being the league’s official fuel supplier as well. In 2012, Sunoco began focusing on transporting petroleum products throughout the United States with the help of their newly acquired partner, Energy Transfer Partners.
