About the Company

Ironically, the company dubbed as “America’s Most Convenient Bank” is actually a subsidiary of Canadian multinational banking and financial services corporation Toronto-Dominion Bank. The company known today as TD Bank was founded in Portland, Maine in 1852 as the Portland Savings Bank.

Not long after the new millenium, the Portland Savings Bank became the Banknorth Group Inc. of Portland, Maine after a series of mergers and acquisitions. The company provided banking and insurance services in the New England are of the United States.

Towards the end of 2001, Banknorth Group Inc. merged all seven of its subsidiaries and became Banknorth. Three years later, the Toronto-Dominion bank acquired 51% of the bank’s outstanding shares and gained majority control over the company. Banknorth was then renamed and became TD Banknorth.

In the years that followed, TD Banknorth made several acquisitions that further expanded its reach in the East Coast. These acquisitions brought in names such as the Hudson United Bank and the Interchange Financial Services Corporation.
