About the Company

The financial services company’s long and complicated history can be traced to as early as 1854, when six private banking firms in Basel, Switzerland agreed to combine their resources and form what was essentially an underwriting syndicate for its member banks.

In 1871, the consortium merged with Frankfurter Bankverein from Germany and formed Basler Bankverein, which was a joint-stock company. After suffering heavy losses, it merged with Zürcher Bankverein, and then acquired the Basler Depositenbank and the Schweizerische Unionbank between 1885 and 1886.

The resultant company then took the name Schweizerischer Bankverein. In English, the bank was originally known as Swiss Bankverein, but its name was changed to Swiss Bank Corporation in 1917. The company went through a period of growth until the onset of World War I.

The company began expanding globally during the years after World War II. After the acquisition of several other banks in Switzerland such as Banque Populaire Valaisanne and the Banque Populaire de Sierre, Swiss Bank Corporation opened a full branch office in Tokyo, Japan in 1970.

Swiss Bank Corporation then acquired Chicago-based options trading firm O’Connor & Associates in 1992, and asset management firm Brinson Partners two years later. These acquisitions helped the company form a globally integrated capital markets and treasury operation.

Meanwhile, the Union Bank of Switzerland had just completed its acquisition of the Eidgenössische Bank, which was a fairly large bank based in Zürich that had become insolvent. This began a significant expansion that continued from the 1950’s until the early 1990’s.

In 1967, the company became one of the largest banks in Europe when it acquired Interhandel. During the succeeding years, Union Bank of Switzerland and Swiss Bank Corporation had established themselves as the two largest banks in the Western European nation.

The merger of the two Swiss financial services giants in June of 1998 resulted in the formation of what was supposed to be known as the United Bank of Switzerland. However, in order to avoid confusion with United Bank Switzerland, it was decided that UBS will no longer be an acronym, but the official company name.

Towards the end of 2000, UBS merged with American stock brokerage and asset management firm Paine Webber and Company, which at the time, had 385 offices and was the fourth largest private client firm in the United States.

UBS went through several highs and lows during the first decade of the new millennium, establishing a track record of 20 consecutive quarters of increased profit in the early 2000’s, but also suffering heavy losses in the Subprime mortgage crisis of 2007. The financial services company also boasts of approximately $1.7 trillion in assets, making it one of the the largest private banking firms in the world today.
