Applying to Whataburger

Whataburger has been in business for more than 60 years. With both consistent menu items and promotional and limited-time-only products on their menu, customers are always keen on knowing what the company will come up with next.

You may have already savored some of their most popular items such as the Whataburger, the Whataburger Jr., the Whatacatch, the Whatachick’n, and the Whatataco set, along with their numerous side dishes. If you have, then what better way to get up close and personal with these menu favorites than to be a part of the team?

Back in 1950, Harmon Dobson had the marvelous idea of creating burgers so big that it would take two hands to hold. He then created his first burger stand on Ayers Street, in Corpus Christi, Texas.

His humble little burger stand gained popularity because it was the first of its kind: it served burgers with five-inch buns! By 1960 Whataburger went from being a modest burger stand to a full-blown restaurant with 17 branches scattered across Texas, Florida and Tennessee.

Its these pioneer branches that first donned the now-popular striped orange and white W-frames. As Harmon Dobson and his family grew, so too did Whataburger.

The 1970’s was the time when Whataburger really proved itself to be a formidable force in the fast food industry. Under the leadership of Grace Dobson, the wife of Harmon Dobson, the company continued to grow with over 200 restaurants across 12 states.

More menu items were added, such as the Whataburger Jr., jalapenos and onion rings. It was during this time when country music legend Mel Tillis endorsed the company with a series of television commercials which continued through the 80’s.

Ten years later, at the end of 1980, the company gained another 100 branches, thus making their total number of branches a whopping 300. In 1982, much to the delight of many hungry late-night patrons, three Corpus Christi locations began operating 24 hours a day.

The 80’s also gave way to even more menu additions such as the Breakfast on a Bun, Whatachick’n and breakfast Taquitos. By 1989, the company has expanded even further to 440 different locations.

In May 6, 1999, Whataburger by the Bay opened in Corpus Christi as a tribute to the company’s 50th anniversary. This 6000-square foot marvel boasts a gorgeous water view and a life-size bronze likeness of Whataburger founder, Harman Dobson.

By the year 2000, the company celebrated its 50th anniversary with a total of 575 restaurants operating all over the country. By 2001, Whataburger has been declared by the 77th Texas legislature as a “Texas Treasure.” But they didn’t stop innovating there: they still kept on adding more and more menu items like the Whataburger Patty Melt and the Honey BBQ Chicken Strip Sandwich.

Sixty years and 700 restaurant chains later, the company is still family owned and operated by Harman and Grace’s children: Tom, Lynne, and Hugh. Today, Whataburger still features some of the all-time favorites on their menu while still working hard to add more interesting and delectable food items.

Serving it hot and fresh, 24/7 Whataburger is still a growing community that welcomes team members from all walks of life.
