Employment at YMCA

The Young Men’s Christian Association, or the YMCA (often shortened as the Y) is a global organization with more than 58 million beneficiaries in 125 national associations.

Local locations are voluntarily partnered with national organizations, which are in turn part of an Area Alliance and the World Alliance of YMCAs. Based in Geneva, Switzerland, the World Alliance is in charge of the global affairs of the organization.

YMCA was founded in London in 1844 to spread and put into practice the Christian principles by developing a healthy mind, body, and spirit (These three aspects make up part of the YMCA logo).

It was founded to establish a low-cost housing option in a safe Christian environment for rural young men (and women, in the case of YWCA) traveling to cities.

This was right around the time of the Industrial Revolution. Here, young men could engage in healthier activities as opposed to going to taverns or brothels, which were popular at the time.

Apply Online to the YMCA

The YMCA online form may be done on the careers page of their website. You may search for jobs either through clicking ‘Open Positions’ or ‘Camp Positions.’ ‘Open Positions’ are based in YMCA Centers, while ‘Camp Positions’ are based in camps.

Once you have clicked your choice, a list of positions will appear, with the date posted, the position title, camp title or category, and the location. If you are searching for a specific keyword, camp, location, or category, there is a search box on top of the listing.

If you see a position that suit your preferences, you may click it, and a new page will detail the branch, the location, job description, and how to apply.

In ‘How To Apply,’ you will see the preferred process in applying (whether by email, snail mail, or in person), the expiration date of the inquiry, and the contact person.

If you are qualified for the job, the branch will contact you and schedule you for an interview.

YMCA Application and Interview Tips

The employment process begins with the submission of your resume in person or online, through the careers page of their website. The process may take a few days up to a few weeks, depending on the position applied for.

Generally, the interviews would consist of a phone screening, one-on-one interviews, panel interviews, and sometimes, skills demonstration or group interviews with team building exercises.

During the interview, you will be asked on your personal details, previous work experience, relevant job skills, and accountability. Because YMCA is a community, the questions would focus on community management and operations.

It would be a good idea to review the YMCA mission statement and company values in order to successfully answer interview questions. Answers that are aligned with the YMCA code of conduct – caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility – is a plus point for your candidacy. Below are some samples of interview questions:

  • If you were alone on the job, the phone is ringing, a line has formed, and a difficult customer is at the front of the line, what would you do?
  • What is your experience working with children?
  • Have you worked in the nonprofit sector before?
  • What are your short-term and long-term goals?

It is a good idea to prepare sample answers to appear calm and composed during the interview.

That way, you won’t be too nervous and fumble around with your answers Preparing your answers to anticipated questions would also give you the time to come up with the best one. Remember to always align them with YMCA values.

YMCA is looking for applicants who have previous work in nonprofit and volunteer programs. If you do, highlight that in your interview by talking about your experiences.

If you have no prior experience in nonprofit, make them want to hire you by saying you are interested in community service, making positive change, and helping others. Also, mention some traits that would help you on the job. Say that you are hardworking, dedicated, and can work under minimal supervision.

The last one is especially important if you have no experience because it means your supervisor won’t have to monitor your every move and guide you all the time.

For the interview, it is very important to be professional at all times. Since it is a Christian organization, you have to be careful with what you wear. No provocative clothes or makeup. Cover tattoos if you have any.

As much as possible, come in simple clothes. For men, pair a nice button-down shirt with slacks and a smart pair of leather shoes. For women, a conservative top and slacks or a sensible skirt would be ideal.

Always be courteous and energetic during your interview. Listen to the questions carefully and take a few seconds to think about your answer. You may also ask questions, which is a good idea since it would convey that you are really interested in the position.

It would also give you a better idea of the job you’re applying for. After the interview, thank your interviewer for seeing you and say that you are excited to join the team. You may follow-up your interview after a few days.
