BI-LO Application and Interview Tips

Job positions are open for entry-level employees who can fill a number of openings like cashier, bagger, and clerk. For these positions, experience is not necessary to land a grocery store job.

However, because of its high levels of customer service, BI-LO is looking for dedicated and motivated employees to maintain its standards. The company is for those who fit the company core values of knowledge, talent, skill, and dedication.

The BI-LO hiring process begins by submitting an accurate and updated resume detailing your personal information, the kind of job you’re looking for, previous experience, education, relevant skills and qualifications, and professional references. An accurate resume would help your interviewer understand your qualifications better and how you can help the company.

Make sure to also include information that would make them want to hire you, like relevant skills, experience, or extracurricular activities.

When the recruiting team receives your information and considers you qualified for the job, you will be invited for an interview. For entry-level positions like clerks and baggers, these usually mean one interview with the hiring manager.

Interviews are usually short and take only about 30 minutes. Before going in, make sure to visit a BI-LO branch or do research online to familiarize yourself with its company values, product and service offering, and how it’s different from other groceries.

During the interview, be friendly, energetic, and cheerful. Make sure your answers are more than just ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ Say how dedicated and hardworking you are, and cite stories or situations to back it up.

You can also say that you’re also cooperative, dedicated, and that you can work with a team, under pressure, and with minimal supervision. Saying you can work under pressure and with minimal supervision will impress your interviewer because it means you can be left on your own.

If you have prior retail experience, highlight that in your answers. If you have no prior retail experience, make BI-LO want to hire you by saying you are service-oriented and that you are a team player.

The interview will focus on your personal details, experience, skills, and availability. Interview questions will also revolve around availability, desire to work at BI-LO, and grocery skills.

Below are some samples of interview questions:

  • Tell me what you know about the company.
  • What relevant experience do you have?
  • Do you work well with people?
  • Why do you want to work at BI-LO?
  • Why should BI-LO hire you?
  • What are your strengths?

You will also be asked situational questions, and you have to answer how you would react and handle it. These are the usual scenes that happen in a grocery chain, and your interviewer is testing you on how you can handle crisis on the job.

  • A customer is not happy about a purchase. How would you handle the situation, especially if he or she is angry?
  • A coworker is rude to customers, what would you do?
  • What would you do if you catch a customer stealing?
  • It’s almost the end of your shift, but your replacement hasn’t showed up yet. What would you do?
  • How would you handle a coworker who isn’t working?

Take a few seconds to consider the situation, and answer in brief but informative responses. In your responses to these situational questions, make sure to highlight customer service.

It is a good idea to prepare answers for the questions ahead of time, because it will save you from possibly mumbling during the interview and panicking. Preparing answers will also give you time to come up with the best one to impress your interviewer.

If you are applying for a management position, this would mean several interviews with upper management. You will most likely be asked what you know about the company, so it is a good idea to refresh or research about BI-LO’s core values, products carried, and management style.

Below are sample questions for management hopefuls:

  • What was the most difficult challenge you have faced as a manager and how did you do to overcome it?
  • What is your management style?
  • How do you manage a busy day
  • How do you motivate associates?
  • What can you bring to BI-LO?

Those applying for specialty jobs like meat cutter or cake decorator may also have to undergo multiple interviews.

Dress appropriately for the interview. Even if you’re applying for an entry-level job, it is advisable to dress professionally so your interviewer will think that you are taking your employment seriously.

You do not need to wear a suit and tie, but opt for a button-down shirt, paired with slacks and leather shoes if you’re male. On the other hand, a simple blouse and a skirt or slacks would do if you’re female.

You are also free to ask related questions, because your interviewer will think that you are really interested in working for BI-LO. Asking questions may also give you more information about the kind of work you’re going to do once hired.

After the interview, you may need to do a skills test on a computer and submit to a drug test.

Throughout the interview, maintain good posture, keep eye contact, and smile. Being professional will impress your interviewer and maybe even offer you a job offer on the spot.

After the interview, thank your interviewer. You may follow-up on your interview a few days later.
