History of Finish Line

In 1976 Alan Cohen and David Klapper opened a franchise for Athlete’s Foot shoes in Indianapolis, Indiana on the Monument Circle in downtown. Athlete’s Foot is a major retailer of athletic footwear out of Pittsburgh that was ahead of their time in franchising their athletic shoe stores in 1972.

Four years later Cohen and Klapper signed a ten-year agreement granting them the license for the entire state of Indiana. By this time, Athlete’s Foot was in almost one hundred retail malls around the country. In 1976 athletic footwear and clothing was a very small part of the overall retail market.

However Klapper and Cohen were both passionate athletes and they were just as passionate regarding the potential of the athletic apparel and shoe market. By 1981, these lifelong friends had established an additional nine stores in large malls throughout the state.

With this growing success in their back pocket and the vision to see where the athletic apparel market was going, they decided the constraints of Athlete’s Foot franchise rules were holding them back. They felt the mix of products, the presentation of the merchandise and the size of the store, all dictated by Athlete’s Foot, were not innovating fast enough.

With this vision of the changing athletic apparel market in mind, Klapper and Cohen made the decision to start their own company and the Finish Line was born. In order to make this new venture successful, they felt more partners were needed and so they brought in David Fagin and Larry Sablonsky. David Fagin was a salesman for athletic apparel and Larry Sablonsky was from the retail market and an Indiana native like Klapper and Cohen.

Athlete’s Foot was usually in the large malls and Cohen and Klapper put the Finish Line in outlet centers and strip malls. Athlete’s Foot was centered on the athletic shoes while the Finish Line went after the shoes, apparel and accessories in all areas of sports.

While maintaining the Athlete’s Foot stores, they branched out with the merchandise line that the Finish Line carried. With their history and clout in the athletic field, Athlete’s Foot was able to put their energies and funds into high-end, high-profile products from the well-known vendors.

Being new to the field, the Finish Line could not compete at that level, so they carried closeout or sale reduced items. Though not planned, this was a fortuitous move as the entire retail market was moving toward outlets and closeout stores.

Because they threw their energies into their new endeavor even while maintaining the Athlete’s Foot stores, Cohen and Klapper had 25 to30 Finish Line stores up and running when their franchise agreement ended. The stores were not in Indiana but rather in outlet malls in Texas, upstate New York and North Carolina and providing jobs.

Once their Athlete’s Foot contract expired, Klapper and Cohen turned their stores into Finish Lines and took the best of both concepts as they moved forward. From Athlete’s Foot they took the idea of being in the malls rather than outlet strips and carrying high-profile merchandise.

From their Finish Line operations they took the ideas of larger stores and both new and close out products. Over a period of several years, the four partners closed the outlet and strip mall stores to concentrate their presence in the malls.

During this same period the market in the United States was exploding with all kinds of athletic footwear and athlete endorsed footwear. The founding of Oregon’s Nike, Inc., their incredibly popular athletic shoes with the trademark ‘swoosh’ led the way.

For the next ten years, through 1991, the sales of athletic footwear alone reached 10.73 billion dollars. With its extreme popularity at its height, Nike added accessories and apparel to their shoe line and became the largest supplier to Finish Line and the growing number of Finish Line career opportunities.

With a sales volume of $98 million, the partners considered going public and did so in 1992. With success in their public offering and their retail concept, the company expanded very quickly through the early 90’s.

By 1994 they had revenues of 157 million dollars. The group opened their 200th store in 1995 and began to expand the size of the stores as well as the number. By now the company was in 22 states and opened 30 new stores in 1995. These stores increased in size on average up to 4100 square feet.

The partners believed that these larger stores positioned them well in respect to both their mall and box store competition. At the same time the company decided to test an even larger mega store of 7,000 to 9,500 square feet that could be categorized and stocked by departments such as women’s, men’s and children’s

Finally in 1996 the team opened the downtown Indianapolis large format store with 20,000 square feet, 30,000 pairs of shoes in 1,300 different styles and the largest line of accessories and apparel ever. Reflecting the fact that the team possessed a ‘can’t miss’ vision, the store was an immediate success. Three more such stores were planned with more Finish Line jobs.

In 2000 the company made its first online sale and a new era was born and the distribution center in Indianapolis continued to grow as did their number of stores despite the slump in apparel sales. During the early 2000’s they weathered the slump in overall sales and entered into a competitive battle with the much larger Foot Locker.
