About the Company

In 1947, businessman Paul Baddour, along with his two brothers, opened a small hometown discount store in Coldwater, Mississippi, which would soon be recognized throughout history as the very first Fred’s store. By 1953, the company had grown to have 53 locations, and their headquarters were moved to Memphis, Tennessee.

Most of the early stores were located in small towns such as Stamps, Arkansas, and Iuka, Mississippi. They mostly offered closeout items that could be sold at discounted prices. The company grew in this niche market, allowing it to open franchised units as well as its own new stores for nearly 20 years.

Despite the stiff competition from other large scale discount retail stores at the time, Baddour continued his company’s rapid expansion and by the mid 1980’s, the company had already established more than 200 store locations.

The expansion, however, left Baddour in huge financial debt. Former Oppenheimer & Co. head of corporate finance Michael Hayes took over leadership of the company from Baddour. The company was then renamed to Fred’s, in recognition of one of the Baddour brothers.

Under new management, Fred’s focused on bringing back old customers, reducing corporate expenses, and reducing employee turnover. Hayes began a plan to standardize each store’s size and layout, and closed several unprofitable locations.

Business began to pick up in the 1990’s, as the company’s pharmaceutical locations became an important part of the company’s merchandise mix. They expanded their selection of garden supplies, and established separate lawn and garden centers. By 1996, 89 Fred’s stores had such centers in them, 26 of which were fully equipped centers complete with greenhouses, live plants, and a vast selection of garden equipment.

That same year, the company also introduced moderately priced videos, prepaid telephone call cards, and several new items under the privately owned Fred’s label. The following year proved to be a very good one for Fred’s, as more customers continued to bring in record numbers in sales and growth.

After a brief struggle in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, Fred’s started enjoying resurgence in the new millennium. The company restarted its expansion and by 2003, sales had already surpassed $1 billion. The company was able to open another distribution center in Dublin, Georgia, which signaled its commitment to strengthening its foothold in the southeastern region of the United States.

Today, Fred’s has more than 4,500 employees assigned to any of the company’s over 700 retail locations and over 350 pharmacies around the country. The company has grown to earn itself a strong financial base and has shown steady growth and tremendous resilience despite the many setbacks that it went through in its long history.

Fred’s employees participate in various charity functions such as those organized by the United Way and The Children’s Miracle Network. This is one of the ways that company shows its commitment to giving back to the community that has supported it throughout its many years of existence.

Job Application Tips

If your Fred’s employment form gets reviewed and accepted, you will be scheduled for your interviews. You may need to go through more than one interview depending on the position that you are applying for.

Entry level applicants usually need to undergo one interview with the Store Manager or Assistant Manager. If you are applying for a position in management, then you may need to go through a panel interview with the other managers and a one-on-one interview with a General Manager or the franchise owner.

Be sure to arrive at your interviews on time, as being late can be interpreted as a sign that you are not that serious about becoming part of the Fred’s family. Being on time, or early even, reflects positively on your discipline and can only bolster your chances of getting hired for the job.

It is also important that you make a good first impression on your interviewers. Wearing the proper attire can do that for you even before you say your first words at the interview. Looking good at your interviews may not be that big of a factor in the decision to hire you or not, but it does help.

After your interviews, you may need to wait a few days in order to get the results. Keep in mind that there are other applicants vying for the position that you want, and the company is doing its best to select the people who are most qualified for the job.

If you make it past the interviews, and you get hired for the job, you will be notified of your work schedule. In a few days, you will be reporting for your first official day at Fred’s.
