About the Company
Few people know that PUMA’s history is entwined with that of one of its fiercest competitors, Adidas. Even less realize that the founders of the two biggest global shoe companies in the world were brothers, both of whom were sons of a shoe factory worker named Christoph von Wilhelm Dassler.
In 1924, Rudolf Dassler joined his younger brother Adolf in running their own shoe factory in the small town of Herzogenaurach, in Nuremberg, Germany. They called their business Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik, or the Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory.
During the 1936 Summer Olympics, Adolf Dassler persuaded United States sprinter Jesse Owens to wear the spiked shoes that his company designed. Owens went on to win four gold medals that year, and suddenly business was booming for the Dassler brothers.
After the Summer Olympics, the Dassler brothers sold more than a million pairs of shoes before the onset of World War II. However, the commercial success that the brothers had achieved was not enough to keep the familial bond between the Dassler brothers from slowly deteriorating.
The growing rift between the brothers, both of whom were part of the Nazi Party, reached its breaking point in 1943. After an Allied bomb attack, Rudolf Dassler was picked up by American soldiers and accused of being a member of the Waffen SS. He was convinced that his brother Adolf had turned him in.
The brothers eventually split the business in 1948, taking sibling rivalry to an entirely new level. Adolf started his own sportswear company and called it Adidas, which is a combination of his nickname, Adi, and the first three letters of his surname.
Meanwhile, Rudolf also established his own company and called it Ruda. The company’s name was derived by combining the first two letters of his first and last names. It was officially changed to Puma Schuhfabrik Rudolf Dassler later that same year.
