About Ralphs

Ralphs began in 1873 when former bricklayer George Albert Ralphs, who had saved enough money from working as an apprentice grocery clerk in a small store in downtown Los Angeles, opened his own grocery store along Sixth and Spring Streets.

That first store was called Ralphs and Francis, with S.A. Francis being his business partner at the time. Six years later, George’s brother Walter bought Francis’ share of the company, and the brothers changed the name of the company to Ralphs Brothers Grocers.

By the time the 20th century rolled in, Ralphs was already a pioneer in the supermarket retail industry. In 1909, the company was incorporated and renamed to become Ralphs Grocery Company.

The company experienced a tragic loss in 1914, when founder George Albert Ralphs fell off the side of the San Bernardino Mountains while on a trip with his family. He was taken to a nearby hospital where his leg had to be amputated, only to succumb to his injuries later that afternoon.

Despite the tragedy, the company continued to achieve success in the next few years, and by 1928, Ralphs had already put up 10 stores. That same year, Ralphs ventured into the food manufacturing business for the first time when it opened its bakery to service its stores while keeping prices down for their customers.

In 1936, continued expansion plans led to the opening of 15 more Ralphs supermarket locations in Southern California. With commercial growth came innovation as Ralphs was one of the first supermarkets in the country to have self service options in many of its departments, such as in produce and dairy.

The company was also one of the first supermarket chains in the country to embrace the idea of computerization. In 1953, the company made headlines when they introduced an early electronic billing system.

A hundred and one years after George Albert Ralphs opened his first store, the company pioneered another breakthrough when it became the first supermarket chain west of the Mississippi River to equip its stores with laser scanning checkout systems. By this time though, the company had already become an independent subsidiary of the Federated Department Stores, or FDS, of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Ownership of Ralphs changed hands again in 1988, when FDS was acquired by the Campeau Corporation, only to be sold again four years later to The Edward J. DeBartolo Corporation.

In 1995, Ralphs was acquired by The Yucaipa Companies, and merged with its former competitor Food 4 Less Supermarkets, making it the largest supermarket chain in Southern California. Ralphs was once again sold in 1997, this time to Fred Meyer Inc., which operated out of Oregon.

Ralphs eventually found its way to its current parent company the following year, when Fred Meyer Inc. was acquired by Kroger in 1998. Today, Ralphs continues to be at the forefront of the supermarket industry with its innovative store design that emphasizes attractive food presentation, high quality perishables, and unparalleled service and value.
