Most Ryan’s restaurants are open between 10:45 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. from Mondays through Thursdays, between 10:45 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Fridays, and from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Saturdays. On Sundays, restaurants are open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

About the Company

Ryan’s was built by former property developer and contractor Alvin McCall Jr. in 1977. The restaurant chain was built on the foundations set by McCall’s first venture in the restaurant industry, the Western Family Steak House, which opened in 1970.

McCall sold his first restaurant and, quickly worked on establishing Ryan’s, whose first restaurant officially opened its doors in 1978. The first restaurant, which was estimated to have earned more than $500,000 in sales during its inaugural year, was located along Laurens Road in Greenville, South Carolina.

By 1981, the Ryan’s had seven restaurants. However, growth was limited by the structure of the company, wherein profits went to the partners and not to the business. As a result, Ryan’s was taken public in 1982.

The restaurant chain then went through a massive expansion phase throughout the 1990’s. That decade, it was estimated that the company was opening around 20 to 30 new Ryan’s restaurants every year. It also started accepting credit card payments in 1991.

By 2001, the company was operating more than 300 restaurants. Some of these restaurants featured display cooking, which allowed diners to see exactly how their meals were prepared and cooked. In 2003, restaurants that offered display cooking were given their own brand, and became Fire Mountain restaurants.

Ryan’s then merged with Buffets Inc., in 2006 and the two companies combined to form the largest chain of casual and mid-scale dining restaurants in the United States. The resultant company traded publicly on the NASDAQ stock market under the ticker symbol RYAN.

In 2013, the parent company was renamed to Ovation Brands, Inc. Its roster of subsidiaries consisted of Ryan’s, Old Country Buffet, HomeTown Buffet, Fire Mountain, and Country Buffet. The company operates 324 restaurants, more than 200 of which carry the Ryan’s brand.

Ryan’s restaurants can be found in over 23 states, operating under the following brands: Ryan’s Grill, Buffet and Bakery, and Fire Mountain Grill. The chain is primarily located in the southern and midwestern regions of the Unites States, and its headquarters are located in Greer, South Carolina.
